A bunion is an unnatural bony bump that forms on the base of the big toe where it attaches to the foot. Bunions develop when the pressures of bearing your weight fall unevenly on the joints in your feet. The imbalance and pressure makes your big toe unstable and results in the hard knob that juts out causing a bunion. The number one complaint that people suffering with bunions have is the pain they cause.
Here are four ways to help relieve the pressure and pain caused from bunions.
Soaking
After a long day of being on your feet, a nice cool foot soak is a great way to sooth sore, irritated feet. You don’t need a foot spa in order to give your feet a relaxing soak, any basin of water will do –either cool or lukewarm water with Epsom salt or your favorite bath salts will do. Soak your feet anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes
Stretching
Stretching your toes is also a great way to address sore joints, including toes. Toe stretches are an important part of your stretching routine. Toe stretches can be done either by using a toe strap, using your hands if you are flexible enough, or flexing them while sitting or standing.
Spacers
A toe spacer (also known as a spreader or separator) is used to separate the big toe from the second toe. Bunions cause big toes to angle towards the second toe, causing discomfort and even additional problems. Toe separators help to realign the big toe reducing some of the pain.
Shoes
Having shoes that fit properly is important. Our feet change throughout our lives, and having your feet measured every so often is a good idea. It’s also important to ensure that you are wearing shoes that offer the right support, and enough space at the toe. Bunions usually lead to a gradual widening of the foot –and not choosing a wide enough size will cause discomfort to your feet. Be sure to choose the right shoes to reduce the amount of pain in your feet.
