Sweat and odor are two problems that usually go together.
It is completely normal for your feet to sweat, since this is one way that your body regulates your temperature and keeps you from overheating.
Sweat in and of itself isn’t a problem; but excessive moisture is. The moisture that comes from sweating, combined with the warm environment that shoes create, makes for an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. This is what causes odors, and other problems.
How to Prevent Foot Odor
While it isn’t possible to stop sweating, it is important to keep your feet as dry as possible. Try to wear socks in an absorbent material –like wool. If your feet feel damp or wet, change your socks to allow your feet to dry out. You should also remove your shoes every so often, to give your feet a chance to breathe. You may also want to switch to shoes that are made of a more breathable material, such as leather, canvas, or mesh.
Treating Odors
In addition to wearing socks and shoes in absorbent and breathable materials, you can also combat foot odors with an Epsom salt soak. Add about 2 tablespoons per quart of water, and soak your feet for 10-15 minutes to help kill the bacteria that often causes the odors. You can do this daily, or as needed.
Excessive Sweating
In some cases, sweat can be excessive and harder to control. Excessive sweating is referred to as hyperhidrosis. If you find that you need to change your socks frequently, or have to replace your shoes often due to odor, it’s important to have a medical evaluation, to rule out some more serious health problems that can cause this condition, including diabetes and hyperthyroidism.
