Corns vs Calluses: Knowing the Difference

Corns and calluses are often confused since they both are common spots that can develop on your feet and are often similar in appearance. Corns and calluses are both thick, hardened areas of skin that develop when the skin is trying to protect itself.

Corns and calluses are both the results of excessive pressure being applied to the feet –and are often the result of ill-fitting shoes. They can also develop from the constant rubbing sensation that occurs when wearing sandals or high heels.

To help you be able to spot the difference –and treat them accordingly, here are a few key differences between corns and callouses.

Corns
Corns appear as rounded bumps that often look dry or discolored. Unlike calluses, corns have a center that point inward and can cause pain. Corns often develop near a boney area of the toe or between the toes due to the friction.

Calluses
Calluses often develop on the underside or sides of the feet and are a build-up of hard skin. Calluses don’t generally cause pain. They develop as a way of protecting the inner layers of the skin. Calluses are often larger than corns.

While corns and calluses are not dangerous in and of themselves, if you have diabetes or poor blood circulation –they can become serious. Corns and calluses can often be treated at home by relieving the pressure between your toes and by wearing proper fitting shoes that don’t cause friction or discomfort.
