Proper Foot Care and Diabetes

Foot problems are a major concern for those with diabetes and are a common cause of hospitalization. Diabetes can cause a lack of sensation and poor circulation in the feet. This can be dangerous, since it makes it difficult to detect foot problems when they first arise.

If you have diabetes, it’s important to be diligent about foot care. Here are some tips for caring for your feet –and keeping them healthy.

  • Avoid Going Barefoot
    Walking barefoot can lead to injuries –and even a small scrape or cut that goes unnoticed can turn into an infection. Since diabetes often causes lack of circulation and nerve damage or desensitization in the feet, walking barefoot can lead to more problems than it is worth. Protect your feet from infections by wearing shoes or slippers.
  • Wash and Inspect Daily
    Cleaning your feet daily is important. Washing them every day with mild soap and warm water is important to help improve circulation. This also gives you a chance to inspect them for injury. Be sure to dry them thoroughly when you are finished to prevent fungus or infection. If you see a sore or puncture that appears to be infected –be sure to contact your doctor.
  • Moisturize and Care for Your Feet Properly
    Moisturizing your feet can help prevent them from becoming dry and cracked. Cracked, dry skin is susceptible to infection. You should also be sure to trim your nails properly to help prevent ingrown toenails.
  • Keep Your Feet Warm
    With diabetes it is difficult to gauge how warm or cold your feet really are. Be sure to keep them warm at all times, and make sure your socks are loose fitting and not tight, which will restrict the circulation. Wear especially warm socks if you plan to go out during the cold winter months, and consider wearing socks to bed.
